How Mud works

Mud works on its own for anyone who makes pots, and gets better with your studio on it. Pick what fits you: you can be all three.

On your own

No studio needed: at home, in a community space, or between memberships.

  1. Log a piece

Add a photo or a short video, the form and how you made it. Logging late? Add the earlier stages with their dates.

  2. Move it along

Thrown, trimmed, bisque, glazed, finished. Each stage keeps its date, cone and notes, so you know what happened when.

  3. Record what you used

Clays, glazes and underglazes in the order you applied them, with coats. Search 2,900 commercial glazes, or add your own.

  4. Look back

Your Activity page shows a year of making, what you make most and your favorite glazes. The table view lists everything, with filters and a CSV download.

Log your first piece

If you're a studio member or student

Everything above, plus your studio's glazes and people.

  1. Find your studio

Look it up in the studio directory and tap I make here. New pieces then default to your studio.

  2. Use the house glazes

Your studio's glazes come up first when you log a piece. If one is missing, suggest it: the studio's managers check it, and you can use it right away.

  3. Show up on the studio page

Your pieces appear on the studio's page, so other members can see what the shelf glazes really do.

  4. Follow people

Follow potters from your studio and beyond, and see their new work under Following on Explore.

Find your studio

If you run a studio

A free page for your studio, kept current by you, filled with your members' work.

  1. Claim your page

Find your studio in the directory and tap Claim this studio. Tell us how you're connected; we confirm it and email you, usually within a day.

  2. Keep it current

Update your description, classes, memberships, open studio and firing details from Edit studio page. Changes show right away.

  3. List your house glazes

Add the glazes on your shelf with cone and surface. Members tag their pieces with them, so each glaze builds a gallery of real results.

  4. Bring your members

Share your studio page and ask members to tap I make here, or point them to this guide. Their pieces fill your page with real work.

  5. Manage it together

Make trusted members managers. Managers review suggested glazes, take pieces off the page if needed, and remove members who have left.

Good to know

  • Pieces are public, so studios and other potters can learn from them. Notes marked private, and sale prices, are only ever shown to you.
  • Photos and videos have their location removed. Videos can be up to 30 seconds.
  • Selling through Mud may come later. For now you can mark a piece for sale or sold, and keep what it sold for to yourself.
